Ingredients

  • 8 pieces soft hot dog buns Opt for whole-grain buns for added nutrition
  • 8 pieces quality beef or turkey hot dogs Or vegan alternatives
  • 8 strips bacon Try turkey bacon for a lighter version
  • ¼ cup bourbon whiskey
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar Consider coconut sugar for a healthier option
  • 2 medium-sized onions Thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper Freshly cracked
  • chili powder Optional, for an extra kick
  • fresh chives or parsley For garnish

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Place the bacon strips on a baking sheet and cook for about 15-20 minutes until crispy, flipping halfway through
  3. While the bacon is cooking, heat a skillet over medium heat and add the sliced onions with a pinch of salt, stirring frequently for about 10 minutes until caramelized.
  4. Once onions are soft, add bourbon, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, and black pepper. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the liquid has reduced and the onions are sticky and glossy.
  5. Remove the bacon from the oven and wrap each hot dog with a strip of bacon, securing it with toothpicks if necessary.
  6. Place the bacon-wrapped hot dogs on a baking sheet and bake for approximately 25 minutes, or until the bacon is crispy

Notes

Bacon Selection Matters: Choose thick-cut bacon with good marbling to ensure crispy, flavorful wrapping that doesn’t shrink too much during cooking.
Bacon Pre-Cooking Hack: Par-cook bacon slightly before wrapping to reduce total cooking time and guarantee extra crispiness around the hot dog.
Gluten-Free Adaptation: Swap regular hot dog buns with gluten-free alternatives or lettuce wraps for those with wheat sensitivities.
Low-Carb Variation: Replace traditional buns with large lettuce leaves or low-carb tortillas to reduce overall carbohydrate content while maintaining delicious flavor profile.
